P. 7

1. Introduction to the Klic-N-Kut

1.01 Unpacking

 There is a checklist below listing all items originally shipped with these particular KNK models.
 Remove all foam pieces, any zip ties, and other packing carefully before turning on the KNK.
 Use the enclosed test pen as you experiment and become familiar with operating the KNK. Place scrap
paper on the mat and simply draw shapes rather than cut them. This will prevent possible damage to the
blade, mat, and cutting strip as you learn where shapes will cut and the basic operating procedures.
 Do not unplug the USB cable from your computer or from the cutter unless you first turn off the cutter. Doing
so can cause power fluctuations that, in turn, can damage the cutter.
 Always turn off the KNK when not in use. Leaving the cutter turned on for extended periods of time can
possibly damage the machine

1.02 Contents of Box

 All models of the original KNK’s came with different contents. The following lists the items you should have
as the bare minimum.

 Klic-N-Kut Cutter  Cutting Mat
 Klic-N-Kut Studio Installation CD  Adhesive Spray
 Blade Holder  User Manual
 Two blades (red cap and blue cap)  Testing Pen
 Dongle/Security Key  Serial and/or USB Cables and Power Cord

 Note: Because this version of the user manual is written for use with Make The Cut (MTC) software, it is
assumed that you have separately purchased MTC. If not, then either use Klic-N-Kut Studio version 8 (and
refer to the appropriate user manual) OR purchase MTC here: http://knkusa.com/shop/make-the-cut .

1.03 Items to Note (PLEASE READ!)

 Power Supply: The Klic-N-Kut’s power supply is 90V-240V. If your supply is different from this, please use
a power converter. Remove the power cable if the cutter will not be in operation for a significant time.
 Connecting to Your Computer: Yellow KNK: To connect via USB, you MUST use BOTH cables that came
with this cutter. Note that the serial-to-USB converter cable, alone, will NOT work! Newer Element
models: connect using the USB cable that came with your KNK. Older Element models: MTC does not
work using direct USB. You must connect using a correctly -pinned RS2323 serial cable in combination
with the appropriate serial-to-USB converter. Contact KNK USA for assistance. To determine if your
Element series model is older versus newer, refer to Section 1.10.
 Blades: The blades used by cutters are extremely fragile. Do not drop or even bump the blade onto any
hard surface as they can chip easily. When not in use, retract the blade into the blade holder or remove
and cover the sharp end with the soft plastic cap.

 Repair: Contact KNKUSA to report operating problems not covered in this user manual. You can also
post on their message board: http://knkusa.com/forums/.
 Transporting: When transporting the cutter, move the pinch wheel levers into the upward position.
Remove any accessories and place in a separate bag. We also recommend retaining the original box with
the Styrofoam inserts in case you ever need to ship your Klic-N-Kut.
