I just want to say again how exellent your web site is www.iloveknk.com. If not for your videos and information I don't know if I could have gotten my new computer to talk to the KNK Elements. I really never used the machine (moved and got side tracked) and paid a LOT of money for it (+600 at the time) and just now getting back to it and so glad that money didn't burn away.

You have been around a long time and so valuable in this business. Again, just wanted to give you my gratitude:-)

What material will the letters be attached to? In general, if possible, you weed letters that small after transferring to the surface… that’s how the pros do it when they have really small lettering.

  2. David

Hi Sandy, I have a Zing Air, and I need to cut vinyl for a mirror seating chart. I am cutting names that are 1/2 inch high. I am using new red blade but am having trouble weeding the letters. If I cut larger letters there is no problem. Should I be changing the offset. Its set to .25

If you are on a PC, then you’ll need to right click and copy the image and then, open the pixel tracing window in MTC and you can paste the image in. Note that sometimes the image may come in as a solid black rectangle. If that’s the case you either save the image to your computer to import into the pixel tracing window or use a screen capture program, such as Windows Snipping Tool to copy/paste the image. If you are on a Mac, then you’ll definitely need to save the file to your computer first before importing into the pixel tracing window.

question I have been trying to drag and drop images from pintrest when I drag it into make the cut it will not except it. can you please help me with this?

  5. Sandy McCauley

That won’t work. The Zing Orbit only cuts from Sure Cuts A Lot. The patch mentioned in my past article was for earlier versions of Corel Draw and, even then, only sent cut shapes to an earlier software called KNK Studio.

Once you install and activate Sure Cuts A Lot, there is a free Corel Draw plugin that will send the file to SCAL:

    http://www.craftedge.com/download/download_extras.php

  6. Gregoria Luna

Hi Sandy I am trying to download the LinktoCADLinkPatch but says its not found.Would you please tell me where I can download it. I am trying to use my orbit with Corel draw 2017. Thank you for all your help.

  7. Sandy McCauley

Kathie, of course I’ll help! I need to know which program you’re using. I assume it’s SCAL but until you confirm, it’s not practical for me to help. Also, let me know which reg mark (top left or bottom right) you’re setting as the origin before starting PNC. And it’s probably a good idea to send me the file, too. You can send these things to my email: smccauley45@cox.net and I’ll check them out tomorrow morning.

May I ask a question here?
I am trying to cut calling cards again, 6 folded cards on 8.5 X 16 paper. I have carefully read the manual step by step a number of times on how to set the Z origin and the XY origin and even have a written check list:) I have gone through all the print and cut steps carefully and I have reread the manual a number of times for print and cut. When I hit ‘cut’ the blade goes way to the right of the paper and cuts partially on the mat and all over the paper in all the wrong places. The cuts are perfect each time just in the wrong places.

If I leave the blade/holder where it is ‘parked’ when the cutter is turned on and then place the paper on the mat so the right tippy bottom corner is directly under the blade I get cuts in the right place. However I do not think that alignment is the right way to set the paper for a print and cut. When I align the paper this way with the blade the far right roller is on top of the paper. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Also, when I hit ‘cut’ the blade used to go almost all the way to the first reg mark on the top left corner. Now when I hit the cut button the blade stops at what will be the fold line for the first calling card located at the top left of the paper. I can move the blade with no problem but the behavior just seems different from usual.

I have checked the paper size settings, I have tried to change the cut mode from WYSIWYG to origin point wondering if that setting would work better but the cut mode reverts back to WYSIWYG each time.

There is some simple step or setting I am missing for this miss cut to keep happening.

Thank you for your always most excellent help.

No. The only dongle that will work is one that is programmed with your license files. The replacement cost was $75 plus shipping both ways. Now, the dongles are no longer used but because the dongle is your proof of ownership of KNK Studio, don’t toss it. You can replace it by buying a $75 activation of the dongle-less version. However, you will need to wait until KNK USA reopens next week. Your other options are two other less expensive programs: Make The Cut and Sure Cuts A Lot… both priced at ~$60. Before buying one one or the other, however, download the trial and make sure it works with whatever KNK model you own. I can help you with testing that. Email me at smccauley45@cox.net.

  10. Victoria Elia

    Hi there
I just wanted to ask a question about the dongle. Unfortunately mine has broken (only used it a couple of times..eek!) I assume that I can replace it with any type of dongle?

  11. Sandy McCauley

I’ll send the version that I saved way back then. It’s unlikely it still works because it would be based on an older version of Corel Draw, but certainly worth testing! I’ll send it to the email address you used for registering here.

  12. Lee Webbstock

Hi Sandy, would it be possible to still get the patch from Corel to KNK?CADLink called the Corel to Sign Lab Patch. I tried the link but it has been down since 2009 🙁

  13. Sandy McCauley

Are you using Google Chrome as your browser? If so, then try a different browser. As I recall, it has a problem. If that doesn’t fix things, just email me at smccauley45@cox.net with whatever User ID you’d like to use and I can manually add you.

  14. Gillian

Hi there. I am trying to subscribe but having great difficulty please can you kindly assist

  15. Whizzy

Thanks so much. I finally found them all under the blog, I think. So many great ideas so I started saving them to Pinterest for easy access.

  16. Sandy McCauley

Hi Whizzy!!! The file is at a link at the bottom of this Team KNK Post:

    http://teamknk.com/a-different-kind-of-gift-card/

After clicking the link you’ll need to click a second link in the new window and then you should get the zip file downloaded.

  17. Whizzy

I was at a “trunk show” that Judy K did. She had an adorable box/card where the box would hold what we call a mug mat. She said the cutting file was on the KNK site. I’ve tried to look for it but can’t find it. Is there any search capability? Where should I look for the cutting files?

  18. Sandy McCauley

Which software program are you using?

  19. Pauline Hancock

I had it before where as I was working the computer would save my stuff for me. That way if I accidentally didn’t save something I could go back and get it or if my computer crashed I wouldn’t have lost all my work. It doesn’t do that any more and I was wondering if there was a button on it or somewhere on the program where I could tell it to do it again.

  20. Sandy McCauley

Hi Stacie, I can help you with getting the Mac version of MTC to work with your Groove-E, if you prefer to stay with it. You can email me at smccauley45@cox.net and explain what’s not working. If you still decide to buy SCAL4, then I can help you with that as well. The Mac version will definitely work with your Groove-e.

  21. Stacie Rosera

I have a KNK Groove-e that I purchased with your help many years ago. I have had difficulty over the years using this cutting machine with my mac. Currently I am not able to get it to work at all with my make the cut program. If I purchase SCAL4 will this work with my groov-e and mac? Is it hard to get set up and cutting. Are there any videos that walk you through the process?

  22. Sandy McCauley

There are other software programs you can purchase to get it to work. But if this is an actual KNK Maxx, then it never used a dongle. It would have shipped with the dongle-less version of KNK Studio. I assume you bought this used? If so, then the software isn’t transferrable. So, you have a choice of three programs: KNK Studio Maxx license for $75, Make The Cut for $58, or Sure Cuts a Lot for $60. If you use a Mac, the Sure Cuts A Lot is the best choice for sure. If you have never used any software and have a PC, then I recommend MTC. If you have a lot of experience with vector programs, then email me and we’ll decide if KNK Studio or MTC is better, based on your needs. My email is smccauley45@cox.net.

  23. Pam Cant (shortypc)

I have an OLD Klic-N-Kutmaxx ACS-15HF that I’ve never been able to get to work. I was once told that I needed a dongle, but life got in the way and I didn’t order it. What are my options now: a dongle, USB connectivity, internet connectivity?

  24. Sandy McCauley

How wide is the material? Are you using Knife Point or WYSIWYG mode?

  25. Marina Topunova

    Hello,
I am using KNK Maxx Air and have problem with maximum cutting width. I am trying to cut design that is 24″ wide, however I have a few problems. When I try to set the origin point at the really farthest right corner the machine does not read it and starts cutting irrationally. Also when the design extends past 23″ width, the cutter freezes and the menu says: “Pause” even though I did not pause the machine. I noticed that the real cutting area is between the first and last wheels that hold material in place around 23″. Does anybody else have any problem cutting material in maximum possible width of 24″?
    Thank you.
    Marina

  26. Rory

Thank you for the reply and the contact, I will send a mail and enquire.

I don’t follow laser cutters… I’m only into blade-based cutters. Depending on the intricacy of the invitations, a laser cutter might be preferable. While blade based cutters can cut intricate designs, the weeding can be a lot more time-consuming if there are, for example, more than a few dozen tiny interior shapes. This is because blade based cutters require the paper to be adhered to a sticky mat during cutting. On the other hand, laser cutters require a lot of calibration to make sure there are no burn marks.

The best blade-based cutter would be a KNK Maxx. Here is a link to a dealer in SA who can help you with further questions: http://www.shop-n-scrap.co.za/index.php/type/klic-n-kut

  28. Rory

    Hi Sandy

My wife is in the process of starting her own invitations company and would like to get some information about laser cutters or something equivalent. to the laser cutter. We are in Johannesburg and need some advice. We dont need anything big because its a small concern.

  29. Sandy McCauley

The plugin for MTC is not yet released. Thus, for now, you use C3 to cut SVG files to the Force. There is no USB connectivity. You have the option of Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or standalone, as covered in the Force Uaer Manual. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  30. abdulrahman

    Dear Sandy,

I just got my knk force and i would like to know

1- how do I connect the force with MTC
2- if there is a way to connect the force with USB cable instead of wifi

  31. Sandy McCauley

    Hi Donna,

You are referring to items that were in Darrell’s video and he ordered those items separately. The Kickstarter bonuses include: 1 extra bladeholder (red), 3 extra blades (for a total of 5), 2 extra cuttings mats (for a total of 3), and the embosser. Note that you can use any blade holder with any of the blades, so you can simply use the red or the blue one for the fabric blade, when needed.

Because you’re on a Mac, I recommend Sure Cuts A Lot instead of MTC. It has a true Mac version whereas the MTC Mac software runs on a built-in emulator called Wine. Some of our Mac customers have been very happy with the Wine version, however others feel somewhat cheated by the fact that it’s not a Mac program and some features of MTC will no work (such as some of the shortcuts, customizing your printer settings for PNCs, and being able to copy/paste into it from other programs). Both MTC and SCAL are eventually supposed to cut directly to the Force. Currently, both produce SVG files that work great in C3.

  32. Donna

    Hi Sandy,
I wasn’t sure who I should email, so I suppose I”m covering all my bases. I was wondering if you could assist me. I was very focused on getting my Force connected to the MAC I failed to notice which blades I received. I did not receive the blade holder for the fabric blade (yellow), or extra blades, and squeegee, which were promised in the initial kickstarter campaign. I did send this email to the support for the KNK as well. Sorry for the repeat email, if you already received this. Thank you for your time. Donna
P.S. Is it wise to purchase the Make the Cut software for use with the Force. I’m new to the die cutting world. Thanks again.

  33. Sandy McCauley

The support page for the original Maxx is under Support and then scroll down to Support Page for the Original Maxx, Groove, Groove-e and original KNK’s. You will find recommended settings for various materials at the end of Chapter 2.

  34. Liesl Golding

I bought a knkmaxx (old machine) I am trying to learn how to use it but only find settings for knk zing. what is the difference between the maxx and the zing. would they use the same cut settings? I am just about ready to give up. I have the 15″

  35. Sandy McCauley

If you cannot locate it, then you can contact KNK USA on Monday and buy the dongle-less version of KNK Studio for $75. Unfortunately, that’s the least expensive option since the dongle is the proof of ownership of the software.

  36. Ronda Foster

Sandy Please help !!!! I have lost the dongle to my Klic-N Kut .What do I do ?

  37. Sandy McCauley

Assuming this is a Maxx model and not a Maxx Air, a fair price would be about $300 – $350.

  38. Carrie Corrion

I have a KNK Maxx I’d like to sell also – Mine is a 15 ” and not sure what my selling price should be?

  39. Sandy McCauley

Hi Ilse, Since you are not in the USA, I cannot provide a good quote for you. Also, it depends on what size of Maxx: 15″ or 24″.

  40. Ilse fourie

Hi I have a knk maxx I want to sell it what is a good price to ask?

  41. Sandy McCauley

Chad is at CES this week, demoing the new Force. So DEFINITELY email me your questions! 🙂 My email is smccauley45@cox.net. I will check first thing tomorrow morning.

  42. Karisa Doane

I assume you have been testing the new KNK Force…. i purchased 2 of them with rotary tools… i make personalized jewelry for a living on etsy and i have been using the KNK Zings to engrave my pieces for a long time… these new machines are my dream!! I know Chad has been super busy and he was testing a bunch of things for me but he is kinda hard to get a hold of as of late so i was wondering if you could answer some technical questions if have regard engraving and the rotary tool… i just read your posts on the force and they have been very insightful! if i could email you that would be fantastic because it might get a little bit lengthy lol!! Thanks for you help!

  43. Sandy McCauley

Did you verify the Baud rate matches between the software and the cutter?

  44. corina

    hello,

Trying to revive my old knk from 2008. load the software fine on parallels on a mac, checked the port is right. Machine will do a test cut fine. Now when I try to cut, it just does nothing. The computer program goes through the motions and doesn’t give any errors. But the knk does nothing.

    Any ideas? Thanks,

  45. Sandy McCauley

Is this KNK Studio that you are trying to reinstall? KNK USA will gladly help with this. Start a support ticket here and include specific details, such as what model of KNK you own, and where you downloaded the software… specific link so that they can make sure they understand exactly what you’re attempting to get registered.

    http://knkusa.com/support-ticket-request/

If this is just a copy of Sign Lab and you do not own a KNK, then you’ll need to get your original dealer involved in helping you. KNK USA can only assist with KNK products.

  46. David Scholtz

Hi I am batteling to get my license files loaded into my cadlink software v8. I did not get a dongle or security device with my machine which I bought in 2010. I have tried all the downloads on your site. Cadlink support does not even get back to me. Please see if you can help

  47. Sandy McCauley

I’m semi-retired now and no longer teach. You can write up an ad for your Maxx and try selling it on the MTC forum or the various KNK Yahoo groups.

  48. misty

Hi, £ purchased a kmk maxx a couple years ago and no longer use it. I know you do retreats and wanted to know if you would like to buy it back very inexpensively…..it’s taking up needed space. Thanks!

  49. Sandy McCauley

Sorry I missed this post, Celeste! I’ll email you to find out more, if it’s still a problem.

  50. Celeste Becker

Good morning, I have a problem that I do not know how to solve,
When I type a word, and I click on it to select it, it disappears. It is still there but I can not see anything. I did try to change the fill color, but nothing happens. I can still see the word when I highlight it or if I want to edit it. But I can not weld or do anything else as I can not see the word when selected. Hope you can help me please.
